Yes it can through three main functions: 1.Deviance clarifies moral boundaries and affirms norms. “you broke a rule, we can’t tolerate that” 2.Deviance promotes social unity Promotes a “we” feeling 3.Deviance promotes social change May force a group rethink & redefine moral boundaries

2 Strain Theory Crime is seen as a natural part of society and that mainstream values actually generate crime Richard Cloward & Lloyd Ohlin – For the world to be successful, society should only educate the most talented people of every generation. – Almost impossible to achieve – Society tries to motivate everyone for success

3 Strain Theory Society strives people to reach Cultural Goals (legitimate objectives held out to the members of a society) Not everyone has the ability to reaching the cultural goals (institutionalized means) People who find it difficult to get to the path of education and a good job is known as the Strain Theory

4 Four Deviant Paths 1.Innovators –people who accept the goals of society but use illegitimate means to try to reach them. (Drug Dealers) 2.Ritualism-people who are discouraged and give up on achieving cultural goals. (job burnout)

5 Four Deviant Paths 3.Retreatism- people who reject both cultural goals and the institutionalized means of achieving them. (Drop outs who become drug addicts or alcoholics) 4.Rebellion- people convinced society is corrupt and rebel society means
