2 The Human Body How does exercise effect the human body? Part 1 - The Musculoskeletal System

3 Muscle Muscle is a tissue in our bodies that converts energy (from food) into motion Three kinds of muscle –Cardiac –Smooth –Skeletal

4 Cardiac Muscle Found ONLY in the heart Twitches involuntarily (not controlled)

5 Smooth Muscle Found in digestive track, bladder, female uterus contracts involuntarily

6 Skeletal Muscle Attached to bone Comes in pairs (bicep/tricep) We can build it by working out Moves voluntarily (we think about it)

7 The Skeletal System Provides support and structure Surrounds some organs Enclosed by muscle and skin Where new blood cells are produced

8 Making Connections Bone is attached to muscle by tendons Bones attach to each other by ligaments Joints - location where bones make contact –Some mobile (elbow, knee) –Some fixed (skull)

9 Next Steps - Diagram Muscular Skeletal Diagram Color code a diagram in order to identify muscle bone and connective tissue Muscle - green Tendons: orange Ligaments: brown Joints: Purple Bone: blue

10 Homework 2 paragraphs (4 sentence minimum each) –You are a Tendon/Ligament/Joint. Write a letter to your body explaining why you are the most important connection in the musculoskeletal system.
