Cardinal Virtues Chapter 15 Lesson 2

What does cardinal mean? It means hinge or source. Just as the capital vices are the source of other vices, the cardinal virtues are the hinge upon which the other virtues depend. Cardinal virtues are moral virtues- this means that they enable us to live in right conduct with others. We acquire them with practice.

Prudence This is the chief moral virtue, also called the practice of wisdom. It is knowing the right thing to do and doing it. Examples: 1.Choosing not to go to a party where we know there will be alcohol present 2.Studying before taking a test 3.Wearing a winter coat because you know it is going to be cold outside

Justice It prompts us to give others what is due to them. We must evaluate each situation carefully to judge the proper course of action. Examples: 1.Give worship to God 2.Play a sport fairly 3.Be honest in dealing with others

Fortitude It enables us to confront difficulties and dangers (even death) with courage and hope. Examples: 1.We must speak the truth even when it is difficult 2.Faithfulness unto martyrdom 3.Defying negative peer pressure

Temperance It helps us to control our passions and desires. Temperance allows us to act moderately and reasonably. It helps us to use created goods well (and for their intended purpose). Examples: 1.Proper diet and exercise 2.Proper stewardship 3.Not spending too much on unnecessary things

How do you see these virtues lived today?
