23.2 Warfare 1. How far did the Han empire extend? west into central Asia east to present-day Korea south to present-day Vietnam 2. What weapons made the Han army strong? improved armor iron swords crossbows kites (communication, frighten, measure)

23.4 Agriculture 1. What problems did farmers face? grow food, make their clothing build their homes one month unpaid labor to the gov’t floods and drought destroyed their crops 2. How did the tools help farmers? chain pump – easier to move water from irrigation ditches and canals to fields iron plow – easier to prepare fields wheelbarrow – allowed farmers to move heavy loads

23.5 Industry 1. How was the production of silk made easier? Foot-powered machine wound fibers into large reels 2. How did they make it easier to get salt? Iron-tipped bamboo drills Bamboo poles to get brine underground Brine was evaporated, leaving salt behind

23.6 Art 1. What type of writing material used before paper? Wrote with brush and ink on bamboo and silk 2. Why was paper an improvement? inexpensive easier to bind together absorbed ink well

What was discovered about blood? blood circulates from the heart, through body, and back to heart used heart beat and pulse to assess health discovered a type of wine to use as anesthetic
