TODAY’S GOALS Analyze the WTI- Historical Marker assignment sheet Introduce an overview of Miami’s history and historical sites to generate possible ideas for WTI essay topics

MAJOR ESSAY 2- WRITE TO INFORM: HISTORICAL MARKER Your second major essay should inform readers about a significant place or event This is a multi-modal project that should be presented as a historical marker (with graphics), not simply a text 300-500 words maximum. Conciseness is very important here Only one student from a class may write about an event/place. When you know which event you would like to use, submit this proposal via email to reserve it Three sections: Text entry, including location and description of your marker, submitted to Turnitin.com Blog entry detailing the sources of your information Multimodal presentation with the picture/graphic of your historical marker

GROUP ACTIVITY SAMPLE HISTORICAL MARKER EVALUATION 1.What is your overall evaluation of the student historical marker? 2.What is its strongest point? 3.If you could offer this student one suggestion for revision, what would it be? 4.What grade would you give the student in each of the grading categories from the assignment sheet?

CLASS DISCUSSION- WTI ESSAY IDEAS What locations/events have you brainstormed about for your WTI essays? For events, what location would be the most appropriate for your historical marker? How do these events and locations fit into Miami history?

MIAMI’S HISTORICAL EVENTS 1513- Spanish explorerers and missionaries arrive displacing the local Tequestan Indians 1818- First Seminole War 1821- Spain sells Florida to the United States 1835- Second Seminole War 1855- Third Seminole War leads to establishment of Fort Dallas 1870- William Brickell establishes a trading post on the Miami River that will be a growing point for the city 1896- Railway completed and first trains enter Miami. A large fire destroys much of the city’s business district 1903- The Miami Herald newspaper begins publication 1906- Drainage of the Everglades begins 1965- Cuban exiles begin to arrive in Miami via “Freedom Flights” 1980- Miami MetroZoo opens near the city 1983- The movie Scarface is filmed in Miami 1984- The Metrorail begins operation. The Miami International Film Festivel begins 1992- Hurricane Andrew causes $25 billion in damages 2000- The Elian Gonzalez affair takes place

MIAMI’S HISTORICAL LOCATIONS Ancient Spanish Monastery Reassembled in 1952 stone by stone. Trasnferred from its original location in spain Coral Castle Castle made completely out of coral assembled single-handedly by Edward Leedskalnin over nearly 30 years Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Nationally recognized historic building with beautiful architecture Fairchild Botanical Gardens Exotic botanical gardens established in 1938 with many rare and endangered plants Plymouth Congregational Church Built by a single man and completed in 1917 using architecture from old Spanish missions Stiltsville A community of homes established in the 1920s built over the water on stilts. Biltmore Hotel A world famous luxury hotel established in 1926. It was a main draw for many tourists to the area, it served as a hospital in WWII, and is rumored to be haunted

HOMEWORK Ready I&A 221-230 Blog entry 5 Focus: WTI Brainstorm Now that you have seen some example historical markers as well as reviewed the assignment sheet, you should begin thinking about a possible space or event to commemorate with your own historical marker. You are encouraged (but not required) to write about local spaces and events in Miami. Take a few minutes to consider: What do I know about Miami’s history? Are there any events in Miami’s history that might be related to my major or personal interests? Where might I put a historical marker to commemorate one of these events?
