New France The Fur Trade
2
n There were six important parts of the fur trade:
3
n #1 - The Beaver - the beaver have two layers of fur, one short and one long, and they are perfect for making warm hats.
5
n # 2 - The Native Peoples - they trapped the beavers, skinned them, and brought them to the trading outposts.
7
n #3 - Coureurs de Bois - “Runners of the Woods” - Frenchmen who hunted and trapped beavers like the Indians.
8
n The Voyageurs were the same as the coureur de bois except they had a license to trap and trade beaver (which was necessary because so many french settlers wanted to be coureur do bois)
9
n #4 Birchbark Canoes - the rivers were the highways in the 17th and 18th centuries and canoes could cover up to 150 km in one day carrying four tonnes of supplies.
10
n #5 The Merchants - they traded clothes, blankets, tools, muskets, gun powder, and brandy for beaver skins.
11
n For Example: n 12 beaver skins = 1 musket
12
n 4 beaver skins = 4.5 litres of brandy
13
n 2 beaver skins = 10 fish hooks
14
n #6 Fashions in Europe - everyone in Europe needed a beaver skin hat to be “in style” (and they were willing to pay a lot of money)
