Music around the World TJ Polzin Technology in Education

A wide variety of musical instruments were played in ancient egypt. Some of these instruments included ivory and bone clappers, harps and lutes, and percussion instruments such as drums, sistra, and cymbals.

Here is a typical depiction of a learned chinese man listening intently to music. Notice that he is not dancing or in any way amusing himself.

Even though this picture is very current, it illustrates what musicians would be playing in 17 th century Belize.

The beginning of the Renaissance in music is not as clearly marked as the beginning of the Renaissance in the other arts, and unlike the Renaissance in the other arts, it did not begin in Italy, but in northern Europe.

Here, an African tribe is singing a poem that is important to their culture.

Japanese instruments are very different from that of America. Along with the western music’s guitar, the Japanese have the Biwa, Sanshin, and Oud.

Here is a basic diagram of South American percussive instruments.

This instrument is called a “Didgeridoo,” and it is from the Australian culture.

Although each culture is still very unique with their own musical traditions, it cannot be denied that Americans have had the most influence on world music over the past few decades, such as this South African playing his electric guitar.
