Software Requirements AOL Instant Messenger: (for visiting me during Office Hours): If you are not an AIM Member you can download the free service by visiting the following site: http://www.aim.aol.com/http://www.aim.aol.com/ Microsoft Word: (for completing and submitting your written assignments): If you do not yet own MSWord (Office 2007 or later edition) you can purchase it from the Student Store on your KU Campus home page.

Seminar Rules I would like to conduct a quick discussion of netiquette in the Seminar Room. My rules are few, but they are important and strictly adhered to! Refrain from “SIDEBARS” and “INAPPRIATE” comments. No personal discussion No obscenities; No personal attacks. Acceptable! - Jokes are lovely, friendly teasing is fine.

Seminars Our seminars have live audio-you will be able to hear me! Students will use the message area to type in questions and comments. Seminar schedule – 10 minutes for Q&A – 40 minutes of topics – 10 minutes for more Q&A and wrap up – We use the entire hour! *Schedule can be changed at anytime at instructor’s discretions

Instructional Materials Textbooks Maxfield, M.G. and Babbie, E. (2009). Basics of research methods in criminal justice and criminology (2 nd ed.). Belmont, CA: Wadsworth Cengage Learning. Hacker, D. (2008). Rules for writers (6 th ed.). Boston, MA: Bedford/St. Martin’s.

Video There are video clips throughout this course. You will need Windows Media Player and QuickTime to view these video segments. Multimedia Presentations There are a number of multimedia FLASH presentations throughout the course. To view these presentations, you will need Adobe Flash Player.Adobe Flash Player

Can't Attend the Seminar? To receive credit for the seminar if you are unable to attend, you are required to write a 300-500 word paper on the seminar topic above. (Suggestion: Review the seminar archive for additional information.) Submit your assignment using the Doc Sharing tab. SELECT THE OPTION TO SEND TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR ONLY.

Seminar Discussion Topic During this seminar we are going to discuss how we can use the research types discussed in Chapter 1 of our text to scientifically study Domestic Violence.

Chapter 1: Science, Society, ad Criminology Research Research design Data gathering Empirical evidence Variables Hypotheses Experiments

Scientific Research After reading chapter 1, Can you explain about what is scientific research and what is the purpose for it?

What is Scientific Research The scientific research process aka the scientific method is the process by which scientists, collectively and over time, endeavor to construct an accurate (that is, reliable, consistent and non-arbitrary) representation of the world.

What is domestic violence? Primarily, though not exclusively, a crime committed by men against women including: a pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors; psychological, sexual, and physical abuse; behavior used by an individual to hurt, dominate, and control an intimate partner.

What is the purpose of each type of research below? Descriptive Exploratory Explanatory Evaluative

Descriptive Research The term descriptive research refers to the type of research question, design, and data analysis that will be applied to a given topic.. Can be quantitative or qualitative What is quantitative research method? What is qualitative research method?

Qualitative vs Quantitative Quantitative research involves analysis of numerical data. The strengths and weaknesses of qualitative and quantitative research are a perennial, hot debate, especially in the social sciences. The issues invoke classic 'paradigm war'. Source: Miles & Huberman (1994, p. 40). Qualitative Data Analysis

Exploratory Research Objective of Exploratory Research – Gather ideas and insights into a phenomenon – Help define a problem – Not answers Characteristic of Exploratory Research – Flexibility (not rigid) Uses of Exploratory Research Gain familiarity with a problem Develop testable hypotheses Clarify concepts Determine priorities for future research

Explanatory Research This is a continuation of descriptive research. The researcher goes beyond merely describing the characteristics, to analyze and explain why or how something is happening. Thus, analytical research aims to understand phenomena by discovering and measuring causal relations among them.

Evaluation Research In order to evaluate, you have to make a judgment or put a 'value' on something. Is it 'good' or 'appropriate for the purpose', or 'inadequate' or 'lacking evidence', or 'useful' and so on? To do this, almost certainly you will first have analyzed the data in order to make your judgment. Analysis and evaluation go hand-in-hand. You then have to go one step further and say why something is 'useful', or whatever, and give reasons for your judgment.

What will we do and learn in unit 2? This unit will acquaint you with the basic logic of research as well as important criteria to complete a scientific study that is both understandable and useful. Additionally, you'll learn to distinguish primary and secondary sources of information and practice APA formatting. Assignments to do: 1.Discussion Board 2.Get Write 3.Writing Assignment 4.Attend Seminar

Research method used for Domestic Violence Which method would you use? And Why did you decide to use that particular method?

Unlocking the Keys to Success! Please remember to contact me if you have questions or if you need help with anything. Each class you successfully complete unlocks another piece of your future! Have a great term and I look forward to working with all of you!

It is great meeting all of you and thank you for your participation! Don’t forget to do your assignments and submit them promptly. See you next week and have a great week!
