- THE RAPE OF THE LOCK - - Mock eroic poem it celebrates Aristocracy but at the same time it blames it. - The writer focuses on Belinda, the main character of the poem; - She is a lady of Aristocracy and so she “is allowed” to use and waste money of people to satisfy her vices as a matter of fact the writer carefully describes all her toilet objects to make a parody * of her. * Parody the writer describes Belinda at her dressing table, comparing her to an epic hero getting armed for a battle.

ALEXANDER POPE THE RAPE OF THE LOCK It focuses on Belinda’s beauty through the description of all her objects. MAKE UP ADVERTISING In make up advertising beauty is conveyed as the most important concept in the modern world.

BEAUTY APPEARENCE IS ESSENTIAL FOR ARISTOCRACY -Belinda considers her beauty a weapon to tackle the day at the same way a soldier considers his armour to face a war: Alexander Pope: the Rape of the Lock – canto one line 19: “Now awful beauty puts on all its arms…” Aristocracy, as the modern society, only believs in material assets, for this reason they think that modern things, such as make up, are the suitable objects to carry on with life.

ALEXANDER POPE’S OPINION and MODERN WORLD People is only able to criticize the others, only establishing on their physical appearence For this reason make up becomes an essential and basic component to have a positive comment coming from the external world.

Pope’s intention in “The rape of the lock” is to blame, criticize and parody the lady of the poem but also all people who behave at her same way, because in their opinion external beauty is the most important element in a person. As a matter of fact the writer “judges” people depending on their actions, not on their beauty or on their external appearence.
