6. Why was the town of Weimar chosen to establish the new republic? In 1919, elections were held and a meeting had to take place with the newly elected politicians to draw up a new constitution. Berlin in 1919 was a dangerous place with growing political violence – left fighting right. It was decided to draw up the constitution well away from volatile Berlin and the small town of Weimar was chosen.
