Theory of Mind People’s Ideas about their own and others’ mental states—about their feelings, perceptions, and thoughts, and the behaviors these might predict.

AUTISM A disorder marked by deficient communication, social interaction, and understanding other’s states of mind. Please relate this to Theory of Mind

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Infants typically develop strong attachments to their caregivers. At about 8 months they often develop STRANGER ANXIETY. By 12 months the attachment bond serves as a survival mechanism that keeps infants close to their caregivers.

HARLOW EXPERIMENT Experiment involving monkeys showed that when their blankets were taken to be laundered they became distressed. Study exhibited many parallels with humans.

A FEW TERMS Harlow study gave rise to the understanding of these concepts: CRITICAL PERIOD: an optimal period when certain events must take place to facilitate proper development. IMPRINTING: The process by which animals achieve this proper development.

TEMPERAMENT DEFINED Temperament: a person’s characteristic emotional reactivity and intensity. Studies have shown that temperament persists over time. Most emotionally reactive newborns tend to be the most reactive 9 year olds. Inhibited and fearful 2 year olds are still shy at age 8. The most intense preschoolers often become the most intense young adults.
