Paalam/ Changing Role of CIO 12-07-06 6 Conclusion The role of the CIO is fundamentally shifting from technology leadership to business leadership and from domestic orientation to global orientation. Four forces are driving this shift: emergence of global economy; rise of China and India (Chindia); affordable computing; and productivity through automation and integration.

Paalam/ Changing Role of CIO 12-07-06 7 Conclusion To survive and thrive as a CIO in a large enterprise today will require the following: 1) develop a business unit mindset; 2) become a great internal marketer; 3) visit customers & suppliers; 4) become a key contributor to corporate strategy; 5) fuse IT with operations; 6) get global exposure & experience; and finally 7) insist on open standards.
