A long time ago people from Africa were kidnapped and taken to America to work on large farms called plantations. Slaves were treated poorly. Sometimes they were whipped if their master wanted to punish them. Slave families were often broken up by owners when they sold off family members. Slaves were “owned” by their masters; they were treated like property. Slaves were severely punished or killed if they tried to escape. Right before the Civil War, only the states in the South practiced slavery. In the North slavery was illegal.
