3 Hydroponics – growing plants without soil Types of systems: Aggregate culture – using sand or gravel (aggregates) to support plant roots.

4 Water culture, solution culture, or nutriculture- –plant roots grow in water containing dissolved nutrients.

5 Aeroponics - Plant roots hang in air & are misted regularly with a nutrient solution

6 Advantages: 1. no soil & problems associated with soil 2. Easy to control nutrient content of plants

7 Disadvantages: 1.Plant support must be provided with strings, wires, or stakes 2.Water quality must be high 3.Diseases spread through water

8 4. More moisture or humidity in air to cause favorable environment for disease organisms. 5. More expensive
