Roanoke (“The Lost Colony”) was the first English colony established in North Carolina (and in North America) in 1587. In 1653, people from the Virginia colony came to North Carolina seeking better farmland and refuge from the oppression they endured in the Virginian colony. These Virginians started the first permanent settlement in North Carolina.

When the Roanoke colony was lost, King Charles I claimed the land that today is North and South Carolina. In 1663 King Charles II put 8 noblemen, called “Lord’s Proprietors” in charge of the North Carolina territory. These proprietors then sent governors to rule the colony. The Lords Proprietors split Carolina into North and South. In 1729 North Carolina became a Royal Colony.

North Carolina was used mainly for naval supplies, tobacco and furs. Colonists fed mainly on corn as it was easy to grow in North Carolina.

North Carolina had very good farmland. Slaves were brought from the West Indies and Africa. Although North Carolina did have some slaves, the slave trade there was not huge because the islands on the coast (the Outer Banks Islands)

The Lords Proprietors attempted to set up a Church of England, but the majority of the people in North Carolina were Quakers.
