Scientific Process Organized Common Sense
2
Who uses the Scientific Process? Scientists Anyone trying to solve a problem
3
Steps of Scientific Process 1.Observe and state a problem 2.Form a hypothesis An educated guess 3.Test the hypothesis
4
Steps of Scientific Process 4.Record and analyze the data 5.Form a conclusion 6.Replicate the work Do it over and over and over …
5
Experimental Design Whenever possible, a hypothesis should be tested by an experiment in which one variable is changed at a time. Controlled experiment
6
Experimental Design Manipulated (independent) Variable –The variable that is deliberately changed Responding (dependant) variable –Factor in an experiment that the scientist wants to observe
7
Types of Data Quantitative – involves numbers or measurements –25 cm –110 grams –38 degrees Celsius Qualitative – involves subjective observations –Moved in a zig-zag pattern –The pinecone has large spines
8
Experimental Design Control –Variable that the scientist keeps the same –What results are compared against. –How do you know there has been a change?
