STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 1 4.15 Flexible metering of domestic and small industrial consumers The metering process in a deregulated market is a challenge for the actors. Huge amounts of data have to be handled in the most efficient way. Benefits achieved by using the Web: –Reduced cost for customer services –More direct and dynamic customer relationship –Increased loyalty, attractive for new customers –Efficient way to introduce new services

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 2 Semantic Web - ScadaOnWeb W3C envisages the future of the Web to be a ”Semantic Web”. That is an extended web of machine-understandable information and automated services that goes far beyond current capabilities. The FP5 project ScadaOnWeb is a crucial step in this direction ScadaOnWeb – Web based supervisory control and data aquisition (http://www.scadaonweb.com)

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 3 ScadaOnWeb project Shared-cost RTD project: IST-2000-30067 Duration: 24 months, ends October 2003 Global budget: 2,7 mill. Euro, (197 p.months) Partners from Germany, Switzerland, Spain, UK and Norway. Key standard adressed: IEC 61850, ISO 10303, 13584 and 15926.

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 4 ScadaOnWeb technology (see paper no 3.41) Basing itself on XML (Extensible Markup Language) and Semantic Web technologies, ScadaOnWeb is the first major project to apply Semantic Web technologies to the domain of engineering data by making available an ontology for 5 SCADA applications (pilot demonstrators)

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 5 Pilot demonstrators Prototype software for the monitoring and control of systems over the Web 5 practical examples of typical applications for the ScadaOnWeb technology The way to validate, demonstrate and exploit the results from the ScadaOnweb project

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 6 Pilot demonstrators Flood warning system Balance group energy management Flexible metering of domestic and small industrial consumers – ”CustWeb” Condition based maintenance Control of distributed wind and hydro electricity generation (see paper no 4.41)

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 7 The CustWeb demonstrator, principle:

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 8 Customer Consumption status The customers hourly demand for the last year is displayed. Each hour can have different kWh price.

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 9  ODEL is an ’object-oriented’ exchange format  The format is very structured and readable  Designed to be used in the transfer of energy market data  To be used where EDIFACT/EDIEL is not suitable  The messages can be either requests or responses/data  The CustWeb pilot demonstrator will implement an XML version of the ODEL standard (including use of HDF5) ODEL (GS2) – a Nordic ”de facto” standard for interchange of electricity market data

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 10  Makes information from different sources available on a common and open platform  Efficient transfer and storage format (OWL, HDF5)  Gives querying possibilities towards data  Allows different levels of integration with different systems  Hides the information in the internal system from the external and insecure world Advantages from ScadaOnWeb technology

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 11 Question 4: In implementing meter data collecting systems for large numbers of customers data quality, system performance and security are key issues; can the author or delegates give advice for others to follow?

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 12 Related to the Custweb demonstrator: Quality: Use of sophisticated evaluation and correction routines in the MDMS. System performance is extremely increased using XML HDF5 (Hierarchical data format) Security through authenticated logon process, firewalls and eventually encryption of data during transfer.

STENE NO ALPHA 4 – Block 1 – Question 4 Barcelona 12-15 May 2003 13 Advices related to data collecting system experiences in Norway: Look at the total value chain of metering that includes: –the meter itself –collection of metered values –communication –management of metered values –validation of data –management of meter equipment –export of metered data to billing systems
