Motivate  Meet with a partner and brainstorm as many reasons as you can think of that a teen might start to smoke or chew tobacco.

Explain  The goal of the lesson today is convince you to avoid using any type of tobacco.

Summarize  Teens face lots of pressure to use tobacco and my start for many reasons… It’s up to you know the consequences of using tobacco  You’ll be learning more in future classes about how to recognize internal and external influences and pressures and ways to deal with them in positive ways

Debrief  What percent of high school students did your peers used smoke tobacco?  What percent of high school students did your peers used smokeless tobacco? Survey  How many of you agree with the perceptions of your peers?  How many of you think something different?

Explain  Youth Risk Behavior Survey ◦ 18% smoked tobacco ◦ 8% used smokeless tobacco  In first lesson we talked about perceived norms – beliefs about other people’s behaviors, attitudes, or beliefs, even if they are actually true or not Ask and Discuss  If a person thinks more people around his or her age are using tobacco than actually are, how might this affect choices around tobacco use? Summarize  If teens think more people are using tobacco, then it’s more likely they will try it out  If they know the truth though, they will make a smart choice of not trying tobacco

Debrief  What are some the words your peers used to describe teens who use tobacco?  What are some of the words your peers used to describe adults who used tobacco?  What do you notice? Are there any differences between the words peers use to describe teen tobacco users versus adult tobacco users? If so why do you think this is?

Summarize  Attitudes young people hold about tobacco use and people who use tobacco can influence their own choices about smoking or using smokeless tobacco  Views toward tobacco use may change as people become older or as they learn more about or see the effects of nicotine on the on the tobacco users they know

 Activity – Negative consequences Debrief  Now that you’ve reviewed some of the many negative consequences of tobacco use, how would you answer that last survey question on whether the nicotine in tobacco is as harmful as other drugs? Summarize  Nicotine – very powerful drug, very addictive  More people die from tobacco each year than all people killed by illegal drugs in the last century  Every one person who dies from tobacco, 20 more suffer from at least one serious tobacco-related illness

Survey  When you were reading the miniposters about the negative effects of tobacco, how many of you thought that the information was related to cigarettes?  How many of you thought the facts related to smokeless or spit tobacco?  Did you think about any other tobacco products as you were reading about the negative effects? If so, which ones?

Explain  Cigarette use – decline over the past years  1999 – 2011 – dropped from 35% to 18% (1 cig the past 30 days)  Tobacco companies – promotes more smokeless tobacco/other tobacco products  Smokeless tobacco – promoted as safer, alternative, or different

Ask and Discuss  Why do you think tobacco companies would promote these other products, especially to young people? Summarize  Young users – when they start young, they become addicted, they will become lifelong customers  Good news – teens are getting the facts and know the dangers of using tobacco, reason why teenage smoking has declined
