Common Core Standards
2
Development of the Common Core Standards California has joined a national movement to adopt common standards and assessments for English language arts and mathematics. The Common Core Standards (CCS) were developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governor’s Association Center for Best Practices, and were formally released on June 2, 2010. Each state was allowed to add/modify up to 15% of the CCS. Each state’s standards are referred to as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
3
Adoption Timeline The standards were adopted by the California State Board of Education on August 2, 2010. It will take several years to implement curriculum, instructional materials, and assessments based on the new standards.
4
Instructional Materials Timeline The requirement that instructional materials be purchased within 24 months of State Board of Education adoption has been suspended by the Legislature until July 1, 2015. This was suspended prior to the adoption of the Common Core Standards due to budget constraints. It still being determined by the Legislature when the purchase of new instructional materials will be required.
5
Assessment Timeline California is part of the multi-state SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium. The goal of SMARTER is to create comprehensive accountability measures that include computer adaptive assessments and will be administered in the last 12 weeks of the school year in grades 3–8 for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. Assessment field testing will take place in 2012-13 and 2013- 14. New assessments will be fully implemented by the 2014-2015 school year.

Common Core State Standards - Mathematics The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) define what students should understand and be able to do in the study of mathematics. Students who master the CCSS for mathematics will be prepared for college- level courses and possess the skills necessary for success in today’s workforce.
7
Two types of math standards Mathematical Practices - describe a set of skills and processes that all students should develop as part of their study of mathematics (same for every grade level). Content Standards - the mathematics students are expected to learn (differ from year to year).
8
Standards for Mathematical Practice 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
