3 Learning Objectives... By the end of this lesson should be able to… Identify the main factors that affect involvement in physical activity Explain initiatives that get and keep people involved in physical activity

4 Roles Within Sport Many factors affect participation in physical activity. Those who enjoy participating when at a young age are more likely to take part as they get older. Their role may involve being a: Player Coach Official Volunteer

6 For each of the 6 influences: Use the textbook to collect information on the key areas in italics e.g. People: family, peers, role models. When this is done, relate each area to how it affects you personally. Task – Extracting Key information

7 Opportunities for Involvement Most activities give opportunities to participate in a variety of roles, including: teaching or coaching, officiating and volunteering. Training is available through most sports’ governing bodies e.g. the Badminton Association of England has a coaching programme endorsed by the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC), offering training in a variety of roles to encourage long-term involvement in sport. If you cant participate as performers at least be involved in another way!

8 The 3 Purposes of the Initiatives… To increase participation in sport to improve health, with a focus on priority groups e.g. the obese, elderly or young. To retain people in sport through an effective network of clubs, sports facilities, coaches, volunteers and competition. To create opportunities for talented performers to achieve success and their contributions to the development of healthy lifestyles.

9 Sport England – The 3 S’s Believes sport has the power to change people’s lives. It is committed to creating opportunities for people to start, stay and succeed in sport. START: Increase participation in order to improve health of the nation, with a focus on priority groups. STAY: Retain people in sport through an effective network of clubs, sports facilities, coaches, volunteers and competitive opportunities. SUCCEED: Create opportunities for talented performers to achieve success.

10 The Youth Sport Trust Aimed at encouraging 14-16 age group to organise and manage activities and dance festivals in local primary and special schools. GCSE or sports leadership pupils are offered the opportunity to put their skills to good use. Experience as a leader/official can count towards your GCSE in PE.

11 National Governing Bodies Each sport in the UK has its own accredited NGB. They have 3 key targets: 1. To increase participation 2. Develop talent 3. Deliver top-level success Your local football club or school will be affiliated to the FA if it has passed the necessary requirements, allowing it to demonstrate its ability to look after the player under its care.
