1 Planning for Thursday’s Morning and Afternoon breakout groups Questions for report back at end of morning and afternoon sessions: (5-7 minutes each) What hypotheses did you come up with and what data would you use? Describe next steps, including proposals for ASM meeting – leader, title, and/or other working group options (SESYNC, Powell Center)? Is this a good topic for NSF Mini symposium next winter? Title of talk? Could this develop into a Synthesis paper? Who is contact for people who want to join in?

2 Suggested sessions for Inorganic Nitrogen Climate change effects on uptake, retention, transport and transformation of inorganic nutrients across ecosystems (n=12) Coupled biogeochemical processes and stoichiometry - N, P, and organic C dynamics in ecosystems (n=14) Role of nutrients and stoichiometry in controlling primary production and speciewws composition/diversity or the reverse how does primary production and species diversity influence biogeochemistry? (n=10) Greenhouse gas emissions / Ecosystem role in climate-change feedbacks (n=7) Investigation of long term data using new approaches and models (e.g. Variance structures of nutrient concentrations across space and time) (n=3) Changing precipitation chemistry over the long-term record at LTER sites (n=8) Long-term role of human-decision making and whether we are seeing the impacts (e.g. Clean water act, populations on sewerage, etc) (n=6) Role of disturbance altering biogeochemical cycling of inorganic materials (storms, droughts, and removing riparian veg, forest harvest) (n=11) How does nutrient availability cascades through food webs and the influence of stoichiometry (compare belowground, aboveground and aquatic food webs)? (n=3) How do nutrient budgets (and the importance of recycling) vary across the range of LTER sites? Links to Carbon budgets including P as well. (n=6) Heterotrophic and autotrophic responses to encompass microbial use efficiency (n=4)
