What happens next? – Revolution of 1848 – Birth of the Second Republic New constitution written by the National Assembly (their versions of congress/parliament) = lawmakers. – Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III) becomes president (elected for one term – well, that’s what they thought, only Louis Napoleon had grander ideas. Gained support of the military & French Catholics – 1852: crowns himself emperor of France like his uncle before him (Napoleon I), led a coup d’ etat [illegal take over of the established gov’t = dictatorship/totalitarianism – think of it as a “PUSH” = Pushing the legitimate out of power] birth of the Second French Empire until 1871 (Franco-Prussian War).

OBJECTIVE I Mini-Lesson: Impact of the revolution of 1848 (7 min) 1) Introduce the major events: Louis Napoleon is in charge of the Second French Empire, Franco-Prussian War, Third Republic, Dreyfuss Affair 2) Introduce Group Activity: – a) Examine each group of images and figure out which of those events the group represents. – b) Put the events in order. – c) Identify why each event was important.
