II.The Beginnings A. end of WWII (1945) B. US drops bomb (1945) 1. Fear in USSR they want one too! Viewed as first act of the Cold War

III.Yalta sets the stage A.Meeting between FDR(US), Churchill(Britain), and Stalin(Soviet Union)before war ended B.Purpose: reestablish nations conquered / destroyed by Germany in WWII

IV.Results of Yalta A.Poland & Yugoslavia independent B.Soviets promise free elections C.Germany divided into zones controlled by 4 nations @ conf. ( US, France, Britain, & USSR) Stalin’s idea

D. Russia gets Eastern part of Germany 1.Only if they agree to join the war against Japan E.Stalin did not keep his promise they did not join & no free elections 1.Roosevelt only did this to keep Stalin happy, gain his support in the war & join UN. 2.Roosevelt criticized for being so blind as to trust Stalin. Truman loses trust.

V.The Cold War drags on… A. By giving Soviets this land a buffer zone was created to keep communism “safe”. The Iron Curtain. B. The Cold War lasts 40 years

VI. U.S. Containment Policy A.U.S. Fears U.S.S.R. plans to spread communism country by country B.Truman Doctrine & Marshall Plan C.Domino Effect - Eisenhower 1.Especially in Asia & Africa D.U.S. supports anti-communist dictators E.Engages in military action to protect these anti-communist countries

US Society Political –Democratic -- government by the people-- multiple parties Economic –Capitalism private ownership of industry,freedom of competition,survival of the fittest,government has Laissez-faire policy-- ”hands off!”,different economic classes

USSR Society Political –Totalitarian--government by one or an elite few complete control over citizens lives Necessary to reach ultimate goal of self- government Economic –communism-government ownership of industry economic equality classless society

USSR, cont. Social –values the collective society do things together all for one Values –equality have basic needs met Freedom is not important –no freedom of speech or press
