Creating a school development plan Jamie Hassan 11 th Feb 2016

Learning outcomes Realise the purpose of a school development plan. To know what should be included. To establish how it could be written.

What is a School Development Plan? A strategic plan of needs for development and improvement set in the context of the school’s aims and values. Strategic means? The process by which the school moves towards its vision for the future. 3 – 5 years? What are the purposes of a school development plan?

Purpose of a school development plan? Raise standards of pupil achievement Improve the quality of teaching and learning Demonstrate improvement Create the conditions under which change can be introduced

Effective development criteria? Priorities Actions Success criteria Evidence based on? The vision and aims of the school Language of learning Different size school – no one size fits all!

Some current weaknesses in development plans Insufficient time and emphasis is given to establishing a shared vision of what the school should be like. Too long! No change after first year on longer plans Heads and deputies get locked into everyday minutiae and do not prioritise planning. The focus becomes the plan, rather than the process of improvement. Monitoring is seen as a separate activity rather than an integral part of development. Target setting/ppm’s/performance management is not seen as a part of the improvement process. Evaluation does not lead to further action for improvement. That is to say, the process is a discrete cycle, not a continuous spiral. Language is not specific enough

What are your headings going to be? Leadership and management Teaching and learning and assessment Personal development, behaviour and welfare Outcomes/acheivement for children Main focus for the next steps in development of the school What can we write under each heading if needed?

The Process Realistiic and practical decisions Putting into practice Generating evidence and analysing data Looking back Evaluation Reflection and review DevelopmentImplementation

SMART Challenging Costed including resources Emphasis on T & L & A Targets

Template example Key Issue 2 Raise standards in writing to ensure pupils meet the expect standards or better across each year in school. – towards outstanding! Focus: strategiesSuccess CriteriaTime line Those responsible CostRevision 50% in each year make expected standard or better Year 6 meet or exceed the floor standards Improve staff knowledge of POS and use them to extend learning and monitor children’s progress. 1) Attainment in writing standards improves in each year with Year 6 achieving the floor standards or better 2) Progress of all groups is at least good but particularly PP Sept 2016 From October 2016 Termly but from Dec 2016 DHT/English coordinator SLT and English coordination monitoring (see action plan) Training £1000 Autumn Focus on Y3 monitoring Year 6 support required to improve accuracy Accurate Assessment of pupil standards Exemplification standards of writing developed and used for each years expectations Each year has accurately identified each standard. Every 3 weeks Year leaders, English coordinator, DHT Supply cover for each year to have time together 3 weekly 6 x 300 £5400 3 weekly support for Year 6 to support standardization Autumn All teachers have had POS training apart from 2 teachers who were absent. Both Y3 teachers. This shows their planning is less effective in Year 3 to meet pupils needs and in their marking of writing. Lower expectations. Year 6 less effective in identifying expected standard for writing mainly in fictional and standard of writing through other subjects. Spring Summer
