13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 3 How could AD be run in 2006? The SPSC at Villars strongly supports continued operation of the AD…… “Crystal ball exercise”: Short AD run May-August, 1800 total runtime (3400 in 2004) OP/AD-LEIR section will run either AD or LEIR, including LEIR commissioning 2005/2006 AD: ops crew = 5 specialists on-call Mon 07:00 – Fri 23:00 24h/24. Shiftwork on AD only during startups and md:s.

13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 4 Consolidation needed for a successful restart in 2006 AD is based on ACOL, built in 1986 Running for physics since 1999 Uptime has been around 85-90%, except for 2004 when it went down to 71% We are looking at 5 -10 years of continued operation Plans for a future Pbar facility at GSI exist, to be operational after 2013

13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 8 Consolidation - stochastic cooling Amplifier maintenance, asssuming present failure rate Programmable delays/attenuators controls: eliminate CAMAC, new interface, supplies etc. Instrumentation P/U+kicker movement outdated, but redundant equipment can be used. Document + cleanup PFF

13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 9 Consolidation – vacuum system Open sect. 3+4: –Electron cooler work –Remove kicker tank in sect. 35, replace w. tube –Install non-magnetic support VVS3105 –Replace BIPM4208 MCP –Bakeout required Isolate AD from TTL2 (close 8000-line) Improve DEM.STP18 Cryogenics compressors Pumping groups, VGI:s Ion pump supplies upgrade. (part of on-going PS-wide standardisation)

13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 10 Consolidation – vacuum system
11
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 11 Consolidation – experimental zone Install new H+V corrector and in DE0 beneath ATRAP2 (main solenoid stray field compensation)
12
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 12 Consolidation – kickers K35 tank will be taken out – no longer in use, reduce leak risk during bakeouts, source for spare parts K55/56 tanks not suitable for bakeout, leaks have occurred (Decision to be taken) Electronics – covered under general consolidation program
13
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 13 Consolidation – power converters Pulsed capacitor discharge supplies (injection line + septas). Replacement of all capacitors + some electronics/switches For extended AD run period, new supplies could be considered
14
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 14 Consolidation – RF C02: spare situation generally ok, but some new spares needed (gap capacitors, tuning current transistor banks) C10 (minimum): 2 Final tubes C10 (for extended AD run period): Modernisation of several supplies/drivers Beam control: Startup as-is (upgrade in 2007/8 to DSP-based standard system) Instrumentation
15
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 15 Consolidation – Target area Spare situation ok except for BHZ6024/6025, no spare and the manufacturer does not exist any more…… Horn pulser: PLC-based controls Horn pulser ignitron upgrade (safety issue): Replace mercury switches by thyristors (under consideration)
16
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 16 Consolidation – Instrumentation New electrostatic pickups for ejection lines (non-destructive beamline tuning) New type MWPC:s + improved ctrls MTV:s, new cameras/hw
17
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 17 Consolidation – Infrastructure Water distribution 7000-line Water cooling installation recently overhauled No main worries for B.193
18
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 18 Improvements The SPSC recommends the implementation of a faster switching between the AD experiments Needs more stable machine….. New corrector dipoles for e-/pbar trajectory alignment in ecooler: reduction of realignments Ejection ppm looks possible (requested by some AD users) – studies will be made in 2005/6 Use of electrostatic pickups in the ejection lines would greatly speed-up beamline tuning
19
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 19 Improvements At Villars the SPSC has also supported the implementation of the ELENA decelerator ring Further deceleration from 5.3 MeV to 100keV will increase pbar trapping efficiency New electrostatic beamlines Cost study needs to be done
20
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 20 Improvements Increase beam intensity: Stacking in AD, proof of principle made, needs work in PS/RF + AD hall radiation considerations 5-bunch production beam instead of 4, need 3.6 s PS cycle with injection twice from PSB
21
13 January 2005 PS&SPS DAYS How can we restart AD in 2006? Slide 21 CCC issues Running AD from ccc reinforces the need for: Improved machine stability = Need improved correction of ecool trajectories Better tools for ejection beamline tuning = Need pickups for fast, non-destructive corrections
