Levels of Offences Summary Conviction Offence: - to deal with in a summary way means quickly and simply. - minor offence - less severe penalty (usually a fine under $2000 and/or less than 6 months in jail. - tried in a provincial court by a judge (no jury)

Indictable offences: -more serious crimes -harsher penalties (from 2 years to life) -always a maximum sentence given, often a minimum as well -method for trying the case varies by its severity

Hybrid or dual offence charge: - Crown decides whether to try as summary conviction or indictable (depends on circumstances of the case) -CCC always makes it clear if the charge is a hybrid -Crown has to say or “elect” if it wants to try as summary conviction (default=indictable)
