Psychology 101
2
Key Terms we will use often Stimulus – a physical event capable of affecting behavior Behavior – actions that can be observed and measured
3
Consciousness - the quality or state of being aware of something within yourself Structuralism wanted to analyze the contents of consciousness to determine two things Basic elements of consciousness Relationships of those basic elements Studied by responses to certain stimuli (sounds, optical illusions, visual stimuli)
5
Functionalism challenged structuralism Influenced by Darwin’s theory of natural selection Stated that consciousness must serve important function or never would have developed Focused on child development and developed many ‘school’ of thoughts
6
Started in 1913, started by John B. Watson Felt that neither consciousness or experience were as important as behavior. Much easier to observe behavior and then make laws of those behavior B.F. Skinner, most famous behaviorist, wanted to introduce stimuli and observe and record behavior
7
Behavior – study actions Cognitive – memory, thought, reason Biological – adrenaline, other underlying factors Evolutionary – how things change over time Developmental – changes in behavior and thinking over life span Psychodynamic – Study hidden thoughts Social and Cultural – outside factors
8
1. Theory – use available evidence to formulate a theory 2. Make predictions from theory (hypothesis) 3. Research – observation, testing, many other ways to test 4. Conclusion – correct or incorrect hypothesis
