WHAT ARE THE BASIC PRINCIPLES? PIES ARE FOUR BASIC PRINCIPLES THAT ARE VERY UNIQUE TO COOPERATIVE LEARNING IT WAS DEVELOPED BY DR. SPENCER KAGAN IN ORDER TO CONSISTENTLY PRODUCE ACADEMIC GAINS AND TEAMWORK SKILLS. AMONG MANY OTHER THINGS.
3
WHY DO WE NEED BASIC PRINCIPLES? THESE SIMPLE PRINCIPLES ENSURE STUDENTS WILL COOPERATE, THAT EACH WILL MAKE AN INDEPENDENT CONTRIBUTION, AND THAT ALL STUDENTS PARTICIPATE ABOUT EQUALLY AND PARTICIPATE A GREAT DEAL. THEY ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE IF WE LEAVE THEM OUT, STUDENTS CAN HIDE — THEY CAN TAKE A FREE RIDE ALLOWING OTHERS TO DO THE WORK. IN THE TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM, PARTICIPATION IS VOLUNTARY. MANY STUDENTS, FOR WHATEVER REASONS, SIMPLY DO NOT PARTICIPATE. WHEN THE PRINCIPLES ARE IN PLACE, ALL STUDENTS BECOME INTENSELY ENGAGED.
5
POSITIVE INTERDEPENDENCE COOPERATION ALMOST ALWAYS RESULTS WHEN THERE IS A POSITIVE CORRELATION AMONG OUTCOMES EX: Fish swimming in a school to ward off predators
6
INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY CREATING INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY, YOU ARE MAKING EACH STUDENT RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR PART OF A PRODUCT Rally Robin makes each student accountable to their partners and they are accountable for contributing ideas
7
EQUAL PARTICIPATION STUDENTS ARE STRUCTURED TO PARTICIPATE EQUALLY. PARTICIPATION IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE LEARNING PROCESS. This promotes time allocation where each student receives the same amount of time when sharing information
8
SIMULTANEOUS INTERACTION IS PUT IN PLACE TO ACTIVELY ENGAGE A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS AT ONCE. THIS WAY YOU HAVE EVERYONE’S ATTENTION WHEN YOU ARE DOING AN ACTIVITY Think-Write- Round Robin allows students to record their own answers on their paper before sharing
9
WHY IS COOPERATIVE LEARNING IMPORTANT? COOPERATIVE LEARNING IS IMPORTANT IN THE CLASSROOM BECAUSE IT TEACHES STUDENTS DIFFERENT SKILLS THAT WILL BE IMPORTANT TO THEM IN THE FUTURE. EX: TEAMWORK, SOCIAL SKILLS, AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
10
HOW DO THE BASIC PRINCIPLES COINCIDE WITH COOPERATIVE LEARNING? WHEN THE BASIC PRINCIPLES ARE IN PLACE COOPERATIVE LEARNING PRODUCES ACADEMIC GAINS, IMPROVES RACE RELATIONS, DEVELOPS SOCIAL SKILLS, PROMOTES SELF-ESTEEM, AND ENHANCES CLASS CLIMATE ALL THINGS THAT ARE USED IN ORDER TO FOSTER A GREAT SPACE FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN
11
