Do Now: Vocabulary Copy the following words in your notebooks and leave some space for definitions: Metaphor Generalization

Objectives: The students will be able to cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences and conclusions based on and related to an author’s implicit and explicit assumptions and beliefs in order to be able to identify and explain the significance of metaphors. The students will be able to create a double-entry journal in order to explain the author’s purpose.

Direct Instruction: double-entry note taking Guided Practice: from “Life in the Woods” (Elements… pp. 193-194) Guided reading Metaphor identifcation and explanation Cooperative Learning Divide into 2 groups. Group tasks Group #1: read the last paragraph on the left side of p. 193 (starting with “I should not obtrude...”). Identify the metaphor and explain it in your journal. Group #2: read the last paragraph on the left side of p. 194 (starting with “I took down...”) and do the same.
