Cranfield Defence and Security: Background and Context School of Cranfield University Own school’s “CDS VLE” on Moodle (v2.8.7+) A ‘special’ setup Turnitin mandated in 2007 All students (taught courses) undertake a Turnitin induction session

Why a badge? Assessing the students’ understanding (not just clicking through) Engaging for non-credit bearing activities Enables students’ tracking for academics (it displays in their profile – or not!) Reminder / link for the students to revisit the training if required

Transferable tips Make the students earn the badge, don’t just ‘issue’ it (e.g.: quiz with high pass mark) Use a passing grade to automate the badge issuing process Provide support and encouragement (allow multiple attempts) Make the badge look interesting Have a go!

Results So far since September 2015, no referral from plagiarism panel Less queries to Learning Services Queries from students requesting feedback from academics Badge ‘appetite’ increasing? Highlighted discrepancies in advice given to students by academics
