2 Date: September 24, 2007 Allen Taylor/TBE/FD35 Page: 2 As an STS-120 crew member, Paolo Nespoli has been approved to perform the Hand Posture Analyzer experiment, but his time has been limited to only being able to perform the actual experiment protocols. Assistance will be required from an ISS crew member who is familiar with the ISS systems to setup the ISS support equipment and the HPA hardware. This course will provide you with the familiarity with the HPA hardware that you will need to complete the experiment setup. HPA Setup Objectives

3 Date: September 24, 2007 Allen Taylor/TBE/FD35 Page: 3 The Posture Acquisition Glove (PAG) is the most delicate piece of HPA hardware. The 15 Hall- Effect sensors are connected to the appropriate sections of the glove fingers with threads that are integrated into the glove. The Wrist Electronics Box (WEB) contains accelerometers and gyroscopes that record overall hand/wrist motion and acceleration. The connector that mates the PAG to the WEB should not be mated as a part of the hardware setup. HPA Hardware

4 Date: September 24, 2007 Allen Taylor/TBE/FD35 Page: 4 HPA Hardware The Target Object Support is a piece of HPA-unique hardware that is used to support the three HPA Target Objects. It is inset with three low-strength magnets that hold the Target Objects in position. The three HPA Target Objects are short cylinders that vary in diameter. The Target Object Support is Velcro-mounted on a laptop desk to the left of a 760 SSC. Both the Target Object Support and the SSC will have to hang off the sides of the table. 6 Date: September 24, 2007 Allen Taylor/TBE/FD35 Page: 6 HPA Interface Box (IBOX) is the central unit to which all other HPA hardware devices connect. The IBOX serves as the interface between HPA and the ISS power systems. It also combines the data from the various HPA hardware items into one data stream for routing to the SSC 760 that will be used to operate the payload and capture data. HPA Hardware

8 Date: September 24, 2007 Allen Taylor/TBE/FD35 Page: 8 HPA Setup Diagram The overall HPA hardware setup spans two racks. The HPA-unique hardware can be mounted to the MWA or a Rack Cover Panel (The preferred hardware and location is the MWA setup at EXPRESS Rack 5). A laptop desk is mounted to an adjacent rack with a SSC 760 on the right half of the desk (hanging off the side), and the HPA Target Object Support and Target Objects on the left side (hanging off the side). Both are attached to the table with Velcro.
