2  Here is a picture of a plant cell and an animal cell.  Cells are the smallest units of life.  Some cells can exist on their own, whilst others are found in groups.  Humans are a collection of many billions of cells, all working together.

3 Where do cells fit in?  Cells make up the structure of all living organisms.

4 While some cells do look different depending on their functions, all cells have three basic features, or organelles. Organelle means “mini organ”. Organelles perform specific jobs inside of cells. Nucleus Cytoplasm Cell Membrane What is a cell?

6 Function of Organelles in the cell  Nucleus- Controls the functioning of cells, including chemical reactions, how it develops and reproduces.  Cytoplasm-watery/jelly like mixture that contains the other organelles.  Cell Membrane- the ‘skin’ that holds the cell together and controls what comes in and out of the cell.

12 Plant cells Plant cells also have some extra features that make them different to animal cells. Here is a basic plant cell: Vacuole Ribosome Mitochondria cytoplasm Cell membrane Endoplasmic reticulum Golgi Apparatus nucleus Cell wall Chloroplast vesicle

13 Function of the organelles only found in plants  Cell wall- The skeleton of the plant.  Chloroplast- Part of the cell where photosynthesis takes place (contain the pigment chlorophyll – a green pigment that give plants their green colour)  Vacuole – animal cells also have vacuoles, but in plant cells they are much larger. In plant cells, they are filled with water and nutrients. They help to keep the plant rigid.

15 As we know, all life is built of cells. The way we look is the result of the types of cell we are made of and the way those cells are organised.
