Monday 10/26/09 More on Heat Is Air a Gas? Lab 3 Phases of Matter Date Activity Page 10/23 3 Phases of Matter

What will we learn today… The difference between heat and thermal energy Evidence for whether or not air is a gas Definitions and types of particle movements in the four phases (states) of matter.

How we will learn it… Lab Lecture/Writing notes Choice Activity

Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (has volume) Made up of different kinds of atoms

Matter is made of atoms!

The atomic model has changed throughout the centuries, starting in 400 BC, when it looked like a billiard ball To our current Wave Model

Atomic Structure

Atoms, Heat and Temperature SolidsLiquidsGases Atoms are perpetually in motion. Heat is the total kinetic energy of all the atoms in an object. Temperature is the average kinetic energy of the atoms.

Test Your Knowledge Which has more heat energy? The iceberg!!! Remember that heat is is the total kinetic energy of all the atoms in an object The iceberg is colder, but it has way more atoms!

Notes: Difference btwn Heat and Thermal Energy Heat: transfer of energy due to a temperature difference (conduction, convection, radiation) Thermal energy: total kinetic and potential energy of an object

Notes: Solids Particles are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position. Have a definite shape and a definite volume.

Notes: Liquids Particles are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another. Have an indefinite shape and a definite volume.

Notes: Gases Particles are very far apart and move freely. Have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

Notes: Plasma An ionized gas. A very good conductor of electricity and is affected by magnetic fields. Have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume. The negatively charged electrons (yellow) are freely streaming through the positively charged ions (blue ).
