Open to page 146 Subject & Theme  Theme and Subject are NOT the same thing  Theme is the idea the author wishes to convey about the subject  Subject can be expressed in a word or two, like courage, survival, war  A theme is a general message or lesson about life; the will the survive, the courage to succeed in life

3. Page 147: Tim Burton  We will return to page 146 after reading the article on Page 147  While reading the article, highlight different subjects that appear in Burton’s films that reflect his beliefs or experiences Make notes in the margins about these subjects; why would Burton include them in his films?

4. Class List of Subjects  Write one of the subjects on the board that you found in the article  How can we transform these subjects in a theme statement?  Remember, theme is implied, not stated  Make a REASONABLE guess about what Burton believes  Example: Subject– being an outsider Theme – Being an outsider often allows one to have a unique and important perspective.
