6 Asia What is happening to China? China exports good stuff 1.Porcelain chinaware 2.Silk thread 3.Spices and tea By late 1800s, China was being carved up This is not good for ANY nation Competition could get ugly China could end up not producing what everyone wanted if they were slaves

7 What happened to China? The whole region had become a hot-bed of war and aggression. –European nations competed to control as much as they could. Japan had modernized, and joined the competition for China –Japan attacked China in a war and won. –That’s amazing, since China was always dominant… how was Japan able to do this? Russia (right next door) was also competing. –Russia attacked Japan over control of Korea, and lost –TR stepped into negotiate the peace. France and Britain had forced China in to war, and took sections for themselves –SPHERE OF INFLUENCE –Special trading rights What could happen next?

8 Open Door Policy Sec of State John Hay stepped in What did he say? (153) 1.Suggested that all nations could benefit if no nation controlled part of China 2.That all nations had equal power to trade in all areas 3.Became known as the OPEN DOOR POLICY in China

9 Boxer Rebellion The Chinese had once been the greatest nation on earth Saw themselves as superior But, opium and corruption had weakened them – allowed other nations to take over Wars and Open Door Policy were humiliating A rebellion group formed: THE BOXERS What did the Boxers want to do? (153) 1.They wanted to get the non-Chinese out 2.They called them “foreign devils” 3.They attacked foreigners, but were defeated
