Turkey enters the war on the side of the Central Powers. An unofficial Christmas truce is declared by soldiers along the Western Front. TIMELINE of 1914 Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife are assassinated by a Serbian Nationalist in Sarejevo. Russia invades East Prussia.

Any ship coming to England is a target. Britain announces a blockade of all German ports. Responding to American demands, Germany stops sinking ships without warning. British forces use gas in battle near Loos, but shifting winds cause 60,000 British casualties. Austro-German- Bulgarian forces invade Serbia, expelling the Serbian army from the country

Battle of Jutland begins between British and German naval forces. Having been the biggest naval battle in history, the battle of Jutland ends without a clear victor. Start of the Battle of the Somme, with the British military suffering its greatest number of casualties in a single day, 60,000. Tanks introduced for the first time on the Somme battlefield by the British. Woodrow Wilson is re- elected in the USA with a campaign slogan of "He kept us out of the war".
