PREAP CHEMISTRY

NOTEBOOKS 1 – 4 Table of Contents 5 Brief Overview of Science Fair 6 The Scientific Method “Come Fly With Us” 7 “Come Fly with Us” Questions 8 Flipwork: Science Fair Bibliography 9 Research Plan/Project Summary Instructions 10-11 Science Fair Observations and Data 12 “How to Write an Abstract / Create a Graph”

WARMUP  Complete the Warmup and turn it in.  Have your flipwork available for checking.

SCHEDULE 1. Overview of Today 2. Mini-lesson: Writing an Abstract/Drawing a Graph 3. Experimentation - Perform your experiments using multiple trials. - Record your observations and data on pgs 10-11. Make adjustments to your procedure as needed but make sure you that you note any changes. - Research (only if you’re done) - Work on your project board

HOW TO WRITE AN ABSTRACT  Read “How to Write an Abstract” with your shoulder partner and discuss what is involved.

HOW TO WRITE AN ABSTRACT  Let’s pick someone to tell us what you learned. Please do not look at the paper!

HOW TO CREATE A GRAPH IN EXCEL  Read “How to Create a Graph in Excel” with your shoulder partner and discuss what is involved.

This is a scatterplot graph of the data described in the “How to Write an Abstract” handout. Notice: -The title is very descriptive. -The x- and y-axis each has a title WITH UNIT. -The scatterplot has a linear trendline. See your handout if you are using a scatterplot. -It is the correct graph type.

NEXT CLASS  Presentations are not accepted late. If your group isn't ready with a display, you will not present.  You will also “turn in” your work on my flash drive if it is a PowerPoint or video.  You will be graded on the quality of your display board information as well as visual appeal and your oral speaking skills.  Your classmates AND I are grading you. They will be averaged to give a final test grade.  Each person is graded INDIVIDUALLY on how they present, including confidence, posture, quality of your explanations, and how well you answered questions. You must divide up your presentation into equal parts to let everyone in your group speak BEFORE YOU START PRESENTING. If you do not speak, you will earn no points for that part. Reading off your board or PowerPoint with no expression or without looking at the class is NOT good presentation.

MY FLASH DRIVE  If your display is ready today, you can upload it to my flash drive today. Ask to see it today and put it in the folder marked with your period.

DISPLAY BOARD (BOARD, VIDEO, POWERPOINT, PREZI, ETC) Names and Project Title Abstract Research Question Hypothesis – if/then format Rationale – MUST INCLUDE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH and be two paragraphs Materials Procedure – MUST BE IN STEPS and BE DETAILED. INCLUDE MASSES, VOLUMES, CONCENTRATIONS OF CHEMICALS AND NAMES OF EQUIPMENT YOU USED. NO “SPOONS” OR “CUPS”! Use g, mL, L, etc. Pictures (if necessary) Data Charts – descriptive title, units, straight lines Graphs – descriptive title, label x-axis, label y-axis, x-axis and y-axis units, straight lines Conclusions Analysis (Explain your results, using scientific research. Was your hypothesis confirmed or rejected?) Bibliography – 5 sources. USE PROPER FORMAT. Use Easybib.com!
