Perspective Art I
2
Vocabulary Perspective is a way to give the illusion of distance or depth; a way to represent a 3- Dimensional world on a 2-D surface. 2-D means something having only height and width; like a piece of paper. 3-D means having height, width and depth.
3
Perspective Perspective helps to create a sense of depth — of receding space. depth space depth space Recede-To move back or away from a point Converge-To tend toward or approach an intersecting point Carlo Crivelli, The Annunciation with Saint Emidius
4
Artists use a variety of methods to create the illusion of space Object Size Things appear smaller as they get further away. Things that are close are large, things that are far away are small. Gustave Caillebotte, Paris Street, Rainy Day
5
Perspective Foreshortening- Foreshortening is a technique used in perspective to create the illusion of an object receding into the background. perspective

Overlapping Overlapping is another way to show what is in front and what is in back Street Life-Harlem William H. Johnson
7
Linear Perspective or 1-Point Perspective Consistent geometric rules for drawing objects as they appear to the human eye. For instance, we see parallel lines as converging in the distance, although in reality they do not. Stated another way, the lines of buildings and other objects in a picture are slanted inward making them appear to extend back into space. Each such imaginary line is called an orthogonal. The point at which such lines meet is called a vanishing point. linespicturespaceorthogonal vanishing pointlinespicturespaceorthogonal vanishing point

Linear or 1-Point Perspective vanishing point - a point on a horizon where lines or rays between near and distant places appear to converge (come together). horizon linesrays appearhorizon linesrays appear horizon line - A level line where water or land seems to end and the sky begins. Vanishing points are usually located on this line. lineVanishing pointslineVanishing points Orthogonal-A straight line in a painting appearing to converge on each other as they recede toward one or more vanishing points on the horizon. straightlinepaintingvanishing pointshorizonstraightlinepaintingvanishing pointshorizon

Steps to Linear Perspective Draw your horizon line If you set the horizon line in the lower half of the drawing, it will seem like your view is looking up. If you set it in the upper half, it will seem like your view is looking down.
16
Steps to Perspective Add your vanishing point in the center of the horizon line Draw your orthogonals in with a ruler Draw your far edges and intersections with lines parallel to the front of the object
17
Your assignment Create a drawing of boxes. First add the horizon line and vanishing point. Draw 20 3-D boxes all over your paper, vary the sizes! Your boxes should be square or rectangular, or if you feel adventurous, try it with hexagons, or octagons. Use a ruler! Be Precise!
