Evaluating Discussions Recommendations: Don’t grade discussion at the moment of orchestration. Grade preparation and response. Create a quick checklist so you don’t have to handle more paper.

Discussion Preparation Assign to 4-5 individuals per class to come prepared with discussion prompts Possible grading Total of 5 points for each discussion prompt assignment. 1. Mentions at least 2 specific points from the reading. (2 point) 2. Connects assigned readings to other information learned in the course to date. (1 point) 3. Takes discussion to a critical level, asks for speculation, judgments, syntheses not just asking for recitation of facts from the article. (2 points)

Discussion Response Possible grading Total of 5 points for each discussion response 1. Reviews/summarizes one or two of the main points discussed last class session. (1 point) 2. Discusses one point that student agrees with, and one point she/he dislikes/disagrees with, finding troubling and why. (2 points) 3. Brings in new information/ new perspective to move discussion to a critical level. I.e. looks for consistencies/inconsistencies within/ across readings. (2 points)
