Federalists The new constitution would strengthen the national government and protect liberty at the same time. –Believed a Bill of Rights would limit people’s rights to a specific list The Federalist Papers: A book of essays trying to convince the people to support ratification

Anti-Federalists Feared that the central government would become too strong under the new constitution and crush people’s liberties. Document lacked a Bill of Rights, seen as proof that people’s rights would not be respected.

Federalist Victory A special convention was called so states could ratify- approve- the document Opposition from Massachusetts and Virginia was overcome only when the Federalists promised to add a Bill of Rights.

The First Government After the Constitution was ratified, steps were taken to elect senators and representatives. A group of electors were chosen by the 13 states to elect the president, George Washington was selected.

Writing Assignment You are a Federalist. Write a letter to a relative who is an Anti Federalist and encourage this person to support ratification of the Constitution. Be sure to include specific reasons why your relative should support the new Constitution.
