7 What would happen if people refused to pay taxes? Why would someone try to raise taxes? Citizen Responsibilities Paying Taxes & Serving on a Jury Responsibility # 1: Serving on a Jury A jury is a group of citizens who sit in a courtroom and listen to the facts of a case. A jury decides whether a person has broken a law. If a jury decides that a person is guilty the judge decides his/her punishment. A jury must make careful decisions. Responsibility # 2: Paying Taxes All citizens must pay taxes! Taxes are given to the government to pay for services people need. What is tax money used for? Military, schools, roads, government employees (teachers, police…) What are the 3 most common types of taxes? Tax TypeWhat is it? Income tax Taken out of your paycheck Sales tax Based on what you purchase Property tax Paid based on a house’s value
