Vocabulary Candidate: A person running for political office. Electoral College: Group of people elected by voters to choose the president and the vice-president. Inauguration: The swearing in of a president. Industry: The making of goods on a large scale. Majority: More than half. Nominated: Named to run for office. Tariff: A tax on goods brought in from another country. Urban: Relating to a city.

Adams, the Unpopular President John Quincy Adams was the son of John Adams, the second president. They are the only father and son to both become president. In 1824, John Adams was elected president. The Era of Good Feelings now has ended. Each region was developing its own interests.

Adams, the Unpopular President The North: Industry was growing rapidly. The South: Crop growing The West: Exploration, Expansion, and freedom.

The Election of 1824 Each region had its own candidate. New England States John Quincy Adams from Massachusetts. Kentucky, in the West. Henry Clay South Carolina William Crawford and John Calhoun During this election they found after counting the electoral votes that no one man had a majority of the votes. The Constitution states that the House Of Representatives must choose the President from the top three candidates.

The Election of 1824 Clay who was out of the race and gave his support to Adams. Adams then had the majority and became the 6 th president. Jackson’s supporters were angry because Jackson was a war hero and a hardy frontiersman. Adams was a quiet man who never knew how to please the crowds.

The Tariff of 1828 Congress passed a bill that would put a tariff (or tax) on goods coming from other countries. The idea was to race the cost of foreign goods and force people to buy American goods. The North liked the tariff and the south and west did not like the tariff. The Tariff of 1828 made Adams a less popular president for the southerners and the westerners.

Review Questions Explain why John Adams was named president even though Jackson received more electoral votes. The Tariff of 1828 raised the tax on what goods? What was the purpose of this tax? Why did the northern states favor the Tariff of 1828? Why didn’t states in the South and the West support this tariff?
