The XYZ affair

In case you didn’t get that... France and the United States had an argument and France thought America had been ganging up on them with Britain since Britain and France were not “the best of friends.” Therefore, a naval war had almost been started due to the inflamed public opinion. This later led to the Alien and Sedition Act.

The Alien and Sedition Acts

Incase you didn’t get that The Alien and Sedition Acts were made to protect the United States from enemy aliens, and to prevent seditious attacks from weakening the government. Four laws were constructed to this order: 1.)The Naturalization Act- extended the duration of residence required for aliens to become citizens of the United States from five years to fourteen years 2.)Alien Act-authorized the president to deport any resident alien considered dangerous to the peace and safety of the United States. 3.)Alien Enemies Act-authorized the president to apprehend and deport resident aliens if their home countries were at war with the United States of America. 4.)Sedition Act-made it a crime to publish false and scandalous writing against the government or its officials.

The Quasi-War was officially fought from July 7, 1798, until the signing of the Treaty of Mortefontaine on September 30, 1800. French privateers had been preying on American shipping for several years by stopping American trade ships with their enemy, Britain.
