“SHINNING MOUNTAINS" By: Zach Miketa

GLACIER PARK: HISTORY AND FACTS Dr. and Mrs. George Bird Grinnell on top of Grinnell Glacier. George Bird Grinnell, discovered the park in 1910 as they were looking for minerals in Montana. They realized the land had its own unique beauty. He then asked President Taft to establish Glacier National Park as the country's 10 th national park.

COUNTRY MAP: PARK LOCATION Glacier National Park is located in the state of Montana that borders to Canada

TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP This topographical map shows the many unique land forms found in the park rivers lakes mountains

GLACIER MAP This relief map shows the glaciers that are currently found in the national park today.

SPECIAL FEATURES A visit to the park should include a tour of the following attractions: Shining Mountains Alpine Meadows Northern Rocky Mountains Glaciers from 10,000 years Quartz Lakes

FORMATION OF GLACIERS The glaciers in Glacier National Park began to form peaks during the ice age. The current glaciers are around12,000 years old. When the snow remains in the same area year-round it accumulates and transform into solid ice like a rock. Each year, new layers of snow bury and compress the previous layers.

TYPES OF GLACIER ROCKS SEDIMENTARY ROCKS The most common types of rocks are sedimentary rocks that were found in the ancient Belt sea basin. BASALT ROCKS Black basalt rocks are also found in Waterton-Glacier as seen in this cross section

ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS GLOBAL WARMING WILD FIRES AIR POLLUTION

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES-GLOBAL WARMING Global Warming is impacting the environment and the glaciers are melting By 2030, the park will lose all of its glaciers if we do not do something about it very soon

ENVIRONMENTAL THREATS: LAND FIRES 2003 was one of the hottest years at Glacier National Park. Multiple Wildfires are a big environmental threat to the Park Approximately 144,00 acres were burned down in 2003

AIR AND WATER POLLUTION Air Quality is another concern Toxic airborne contaminants find their way to the rivers and streams. High levels of nitrogen can damage the alpine ecosystems in the park. Air pollution sometimes cause haze in the park, which means that the visitors cannot see views and landmarks.

TECHNOLOGY USED TO HELP THE PARK Glacier National Park has its own Twitter and Facebook feed E tours and Webcams are used to promote and protect the park Digital promotions on the internet tell people about the risks For example, they wanted to drill for Oil in Glacier Park and the website helped to stop it with public support. Also webcams can detect wildfires and other threats to the landscape. Computer generated programs can also predict the reduction of glaciers in the future

THE REDUCTION OF GLACIERS The National Park is changing from global warming In 1850, Glacier National Park had 150 glaciers Today, only 25 remain large enough to be considered functional glaciers Wild fires also pose a threat to the Park. With rising temperatures, wildfires will destroy the homes of its natural inhabitants and melt the snow Air and water pollutants will continue to impact the Alpine Ecosystem and surrounding streams and mountains

THE PARK WILL LOSE ITS NATURAL BEAUTY IF WE DO NOT FIGHT TO PRESERVE IT
