6 “The Bet” Background Info Russia before Revolution of 1905 At the time the story opens, political criminals convicted of various offenses were being tried and imprisoned, thus the impetus for the banker and lawyer’s conversation

7 “The Bet” Mood: In your groups, pull out words from the exposition that contribute to the mood. Write them on the board. What IS the mood of the story then? What is the setting?

8 Characterization Process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Two Types: 1.Direct: tells the audience what the personality of the character is (ex: The patient boy and quiet girl were well mannered and didn’t disobey their mother.) 2.Indirect: shows things that reveal to the audience what the personality of the character is (ex: Julie owned a multitude of outfits and accessories, and it always took her forever to decide which combination might impress Trent.)
