Glassware and Equipment

Bunsen Burner Produces single open gas flame. Used for sterilization, heating and combustion.

Balance Used to measure mass of an object or substance. Often called the Triple Balance Beam.

Funnel Used with filter paper to separate solids from liquids.

Tongs Used for grasping and lifting materials. Sometimes used to grasp hot beakers.

Ring Stand A stand used to support a ring clamp or test tube clamp. Ex: put Bunsen burner underneath and heat up a substance.

Erlenmeyer Flask Glassware used to heat and store substances. Has a tapered neck for plug.

Beaker Used to stir, heat something, and measure a liquid volume roughly (mL).

Graduated Cylinder Used to measure out a liquid in mL. More accurate than the beaker. Read the bottom of the meniscus when measuring out a liquid.

Test Tube Used to mix heat or store liquids.

Test Tube Clamp Used to grasp test tube if hot.

General Rules 1.Follow ALL instructions. 2.No eating, chewing gum, or drinking in the lab. 3.No Horse play. 4.Keep work areas clean. 5.Be responsible. 6.Dispose of all waste properly.

Clothing Goggles at all times Hair put back. Closed toed shoes. NO SANDALS! Lab Aprons should be worn at all times.

Accidents and Injuries Report any accident or spill to the teacher! If chemicals splash in your eye, immediately flush with running water from the eyewash station. If a mercury thermometer is broken, DO NOT TOUCH MERCURY! If an acid splashes on your skin, wash with plenty of water.

Extra Precaution! Flammable materials should never be dispensed or used near an open flame. If you are heating something up, always point the test tube away from people.
