Welcome! Miss Gilbranch Mrs Harkness
2
Expectations Children are expected to follow the school’s classroom rules which are on display in every room. There are plenty of occasions when we encourage discussion but there are also times when we ask the children to work in silence. We also try to develop the children’s ability to work independently.
3
Expectations Children are expected to practise spellings and tables every week and we also ask parents/carers to read with their children a minimum of three times per week. This needs to be recorded in their Homework Diaries.
4
Uniform Children are expected to wear school uniform. There is a Winter and Summer uniform – see handbook. Summer gingham dresses must be white and green. Formal school shoes must be worn at school, if a child loses or does not have these (for any reason) plimsolls should be worn. We have spare plimsolls if the child does not have any.
5
Nail varnish and make-up should not be worn at school. Girls must adhere to school headwear – bows etc. Cardigans and jumpers must not be tied around waists. Shirts must be tucked in.
6
Rewards and Consequences Rewards follow the school’s Cloud System. Children start each day on the Sun and can move up to the Star for exemplary behaviour. Rewards include Golden Time, certificates and house-points. (This has just been reviewed after discussion with children/School Council.) Warnings follow the school system; initial warning (which can be collective,) moving away from others, miss play and seeing Headteacher/parents for serious incidents.
7
Morning Routine Children come in via the playground door from 8:40am, enter class, put bags, purses, water bottles, reading books, etc. away. Children settle to Early Morning Work. The door is locked at 8:50am then a bell rings. Late children must report to the office. 8:50am Registration. 9:00am Assembly
8
Homework The children will be given spellings on a Friday and tested on a Wednesday. In addition to this, they will receive maths homework (which will usually be Mathletics.) This is issued on Friday and returned on or before the following Wednesday. Later in the year children will receive mini-projects to complete over a half term. Teachers will provide a structure to the pieces of work expected/issued.
9
Mathletics Mathletics is used in class to help us monitor the progression of pupils. If possible, encourage the children to use this at home too. Children can receive support, when working on Mathletics at home.
10
Reading Our books are banded to give our children an appropriate reading experience. Children will change their books as appropriate. Children also have access to the books in the Infant/Junior Library and a class selection.
11
Groups Across the school, we use the same names for the groups to ensure consistency and to allow all members of the school community to identify the groups.
12
Activities The groups at Harold Wood Primary School are: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green and Blue. These groups cater for children who are above National expectations through to those working below national expectations. Children can work in mixed ability groups for some subjects and can also be moved for certain activities.
13
Snacks Fruit and vegetables are offered free of charge to the Key Stage 1 children daily – please note any allergies with their teacher.
14
Water Bottles Children can bring in a water bottle for use during the day. We encourage this as a way of helping the children to concentrate. However, children are not permitted to drink while teaching is in progress. Also ensure that water bottles have sports’ caps to reduce spillage.
15
Toilet Children are encouraged to go to the toilet: o Before school o Break times o Lunch times * Exceptions can be made.
16
PE PE will take place in the hall on Friday Games will be outside on a Thursday.
17
PE and Swimming No jewellery is allowed to be worn at school, except for watches. Watches must be removed for PE lessons. The children are responsible for their belongings. If children wear earrings, they will be asked to take them out.
18
How we ensure consistency across Y1 Teachers plan their lessons together to ensure continuity across the classes. However, we adapt all our lessons to the needs of our particular class so experiences may vary.
