3 Mohandas K. Gandhi 1869-1948 (78) Born to a middle class family Trained to be a lawyer in London, England Spent many years as a lawyer in South Africa Became the leader of the Indian Independence movement from Britain Strongly believed in a policy of NON-VIOLENCE

4 Gandhi, reflecting on non-violence It is not at all impossible that we might have to endure every hardship that we can imagine, and wisdom lies in pledging ourselves on the understanding that we shall have to suffer all that and worse. If some one asks me when and how the struggle may end, I may say that if the entire community manfully stands the test, the end will be near. If many of us fal back under the storm and stress, the struggle will be prolonged. But I can boldly declare, and with certainty, that so long as there is even a handful of men true to their pledge, there can only be one end to the struggle, and that is victory.

9 The Amritsar Massacre The British government promised Indians that if they served in the British military during WWI, they would eventually be able to govern themselves. British lied, riots ensued. In 1919, the British passed the Rowlatt Acts. These laws allowed the government to jail protestors without trial for up to 2 years. To protest the Rowlatt Acts, 10,000 Hindus and Muslims flocked to Amritsar to fast, pray and protest peacefully.
