Overview 1.Goals 2.Measurements 3.After BARCA? 4.Other talks
2
BARCA Goal 1.Develop basin-scale constraints on carbon balance using airborne measurements. Other than getting a number… Will extend and integrate science from local studies. Will provide a target for: 1.Extrapolation of local-scale measurements (e.g. EC towers, river pCO 2, etc.) 2.Bottom-up modeling studies. Bonus: Will improve our constraint on global C budgets.
3
Air Measurements 1.Airborne Measurements. Transects + Lagrangian experiments Regular profiles at Santarem and Manaus 2.Tower Based CO 2 (and other) measurements at Natal, EC towers, … 3.Others…?
4
Towers 1.Allow for continuous measurement, which greatly adds to information on fluxes (see Scott Denning’s talk) 2.Highly calibrated continuous CO 2 measurements with weekly flasks for QC and other gases (CH 4, CO, N 2 O, SF 6, H 2, 13 C, and 18 O of CO 2 ). High accuracy cal. gases and measurements will be available in Brazil (IPEN, CENA).
5
Post-BARCA? 1.Measurement of CO 2 and other gases at towers and coastal sites. 2.This allows us to go “multi-temporal” and most importantly leave a legacy of large- scale flux monitoring after BARCA.
6
Coming up… 1.Maria: Science review and Tasks. 2.Scott: Modeling overview (esp. towers). 3.Steve: Airborne plans and modeling
