Bell Work: 10/11/11 Is It a Rock?  Write down the names of the following items that you believe are rocks:  Explain your thinking. What “rule” or reasoning did you use to decide if something is a rock? Cement blockPiece of clay potCoal Dried mudCoralbrick Hardened lavaLimestoneA gravestone Asphalt (road tar) Iron oreMarble statue GlassConcretegranite

Objectives Identify the major processes that drive the rock cycle. Label a diagram that depicts the three different rock types.

The Rock Cycle  You know that paper, plastic, and aluminum can be recycled. But did you know that the Earth also recycles? And one of the things that Earth recycles is rock.  Discuss the following questions with your group: –What is rock? –How can rock be recycled? –How long would recycling a rock take? –What would the rock look like before, during, and after the process of recycling?

The Rock Cycle  Scientist define ________ as a naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals and organic matter.  ROCKS ARE ALWAYS CHANGING!  The continual process by which new rocks forms from old rock material is called the _______ ________. rock rockcycle

The Value of Rock  Rock has been an important natural resource as long as humans have existed.  Discuss the following questions with your group: –How did early humans use rock? –What are some other ways rock has been used throughout the centuries?  Let’s look at page 360.

Processes that Shape the Earth  Let’s look at the top of pg. 361  The process in which water, wind, ice, and heat break down rock is called ___________.  Discuss with your group why this is important.  Weathering is important because it breaks down rock into fragments called __________. These sediments make _____________ ______. weathering sediment sedimentaryrock

Processes that Shape the Earth  The process by which the sediment is removed from its source and carried away is called ________. Causes of erosion: –Water –Wind –Ice –Gravity  The process in which sediment moved by erosion is dropped and comes to rest is called ____________.  Let’s look at pg. 361 erosion deposition

Processes that Shape the Earth How the cycle continues… Buried rock is exposed at the Earth’s surface by a combination of _______ and _______. Uplift is ___________ within the Earth that causes _______ inside the Earth to be moved to the Earth’s surface. uplift erosion movement rocks

Heat & Pressure  If the temperature and pressure are high enough at the bottom of the sediment, the sedimentary rock can change into a ___________ ______.  In some cases, the rock gets hot enough to melt into _________.  The magma eventually cools to form __________ ______. metamorphicrock magma igneous rock

Rock Classification Scientist classify rocks by composition and texture. The minerals a rock contains determine the ___________ of that rock. Look on page 365. The size, shape, and positions of the grains that make up a rock determines a rock’s ___________. Look on page 366. composition texture

The Rock Cycle Pg. 364 deposition compaction & cementation solidification deposition
